17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP)
The test determines the level of 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) — a steroid hormone synthesized by the adrenal cortex and to a lesser extent by the sex glands. It is an important indicator of steroid metabolism and an intermediate product in cortisol synthesis. Used to diagnose congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), including latent disease forms. Helps differentiate hyperandrogenism source: adrenal or gonadal.
What the test evaluates:
- 17-OHP concentration in blood or urine
- Adrenal cortex functional state
- Steroid synthesis enzyme activity
Biomaterial:
- Venous blood
- 24-hour urine (by clinical indications)
- Draw blood fasting
- Morning blood draw recommended (8:00-10:00)
- Exclude physical activity and emotional stress 24 hours before
Medications:
- Steroid and hormonal drugs may distort results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Suspected adrenal diseases and hormonal disorders
- Hirsutism, acne, menstrual irregularities, infertility
- Delayed or disordered sexual development
- Hyperandrogenism signs in men
Elevated level: may indicate congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal tumors, or pronounced hyperandrogenism
Reduced level: possible adrenal cortex insufficiency or steroid hormone synthesis disorder.
