24-Hour Urine Creatinine
Purpose of the test:
- Determining creatinine in 24-hour urine assesses the daily kidney filtration capacity.
- Used for diagnosing and monitoring kidney diseases, treatment monitoring, and assessing kidney function in metabolic disorders.
What the test assesses:
- Daily creatinine excretion — indicator of renal filtration and excretion efficiency.
Biomaterial: 24-hour urine
- Collect all urine over 24 hours in a clean container.
- Avoid intense physical exertion and alcohol on the collection day.
Medications: if possible, avoid taking drugs affecting the kidneys and metabolism 24-48 hours before the test.
- Normal: corresponds to age, body weight, and kidney functional status.
- Elevated level: may indicate dehydration, increased muscle metabolism, or increased excretion.
- Decreased level: possible renal failure, decreased filtration function, decreased muscle mass, or metabolic disorders.
- Important: it is recommended to compare with blood creatinine level and other kidney indicators.
Which doctor to consult:
- Nephrologist — for kidney pathology
- General practitioner — kidney status monitoring
- Endocrinologist — for diabetes and associated metabolic disorders
