ASO (Antistreptolysin-O), Quantitative
Purpose of the test:
Quantitative ASO determines the precise level of antibodies to streptococcus in blood.
Used for:
- diagnosing consequences of streptococcal infection
- assessing immune response activity
- dynamic monitoring (repeat in 1-2 weeks if needed)
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Fasting for 8-12 hours;
- water allowed;
- avoid fatty food/alcohol for 24 hours.
Medications: inform staff about antibiotic and hormone use.
Prescribed for:
- suspected rheumatism
- joint pain after sore throat
- suspected rheumatic heart disease
- inflammatory kidney diseases after infection
- prolonged fever after sore throat
Important: dynamics matter. One value may be insufficient — a doctor may order a repeat test.
Normal/low level — active connection with streptococcus is unlikely
High level — recent contact/recent streptococcal infection is likely
With elevation, consultation with a general practitioner is recommended, and rheumatologist/cardiologist/nephrologist if needed. Self-treatment is contraindicated.
