Beta-carotene (Beta-Carotene, Serum)
The test determines the level of beta-carotene in blood serum - a provitamin A (precursor to vitamin A) and potent antioxidant. Beta-carotene participates in: vision processes; cell growth and differentiation; immunity maintenance; skin and mucous membrane health. The study detects beta-carotene deficiency or excess, relevant for assessing dietary vitamin A status.
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
- Exclude fatty food and vitamin A intake 24 hours before
Medications:
If possible, discontinue vitamin A preparations and complexes 24-48 hours before
If discontinuation is not possible - indicate medications taken"
- Reduced twilight vision
- Dry skin and mucous membranes
- Frequent infections
- Suspected hypo- or hypervitaminosis A

Low beta-carotene - deficiency - possible vision, skin, and immunity disorders
Normal level - sufficient vitamin A provitamin supply
Elevated level - more often associated with vitamin preparation intake
