Cytomegalovirus DNA, Conjunctival Epithelial Cell Scraping (PCR)
The study is aimed at detecting cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA by PCR in conjunctival epithelial cells.
Used for diagnosing cytomegalovirus eye lesions.
Applied for conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and vision decline of unclear origin.
Particularly important in patients with weakened immunity, including HIV-infected and post-transplant patients.
Allows determination of local viral infection activity and assessment of the need for antiviral therapy.
What the test assesses:
– Presence of CMV DNA in conjunctival epithelial cells.
– Local activity of the viral infection.
– Possible effect of the infection on eye condition and complication risk.
Biomaterial: Conjunctival epithelial cell scraping
– Do not use eye drops or ointments for 24 hours before the test.
– Do not apply cosmetics to the eye area on the day of the test.
– Avoid contact lenses on the day of submission if possible.
Medications:
– If possible, discontinue antiviral medications 48 hours before.
– Local eye medications may affect the result — coordinate with the doctor.
– If discontinuation is not possible, be sure to indicate all medications taken.
Recommended for testing:
– With inflammatory eye diseases, conjunctivitis, and keratitis.
– When CMV infection is suspected in immunocompromised patients.
– With immunodeficiency conditions and monitoring of viral infection activity.
– With prolonged inflammatory processes and suspected viral origin.
– Positive result: CMV DNA detected, indicating active local infection. Clinical significance assessment is required, and if necessary, antiviral treatment.
– Negative result: CMV DNA not detected; active infection is unlikely.
Important — results should be interpreted together with the clinical picture, serological tests, and ophthalmological examination.
