Direct (Conjugated) Bilirubin
Direct bilirubin is the 'bound' bilirubin form already processed by the liver and being prepared for excretion in bile.
It is important for assessing bile outflow and liver status.
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Fasting for 8-12 hours.
Medications: inform staff of medications taken.
Prescribed for:
- jaundice
- suspected bile stasis
- gallbladder diseases
- cholestasis in pregnant women (as prescribed by a doctor)
- monitoring liver diseases
Elevated direct bilirubin more often indicates:
- bile outflow disorder (stones, inflammation, kinks, cholestasis)
- liver damage (hepatitis, cirrhosis)
Gastroenterologist consultation is recommended. Self-treatment is contraindicated.
