DNA Ascaris lumbricoides — PCR, qualitative
Detects Ascaris lumbricoides DNA — roundworm causing ascariasis. PCR detects parasite genetic material even when eggs/larvae are destroyed and undetectable by microscopy. More sensitive than microscopy; detects even small parasite fragments.
Infection routes:
- dirty hands;
- unwashed vegetables, fruits, berries;
- soil contact;
- contaminated water;
- poor hygiene.
Recommended for:
- children;
- soil workers;
- elevated eosinophils;
- chronic unexplained allergies;
- prolonged intestinal symptoms;
- negative microscopy results.
Biomaterial: Stool
- Do not take laxatives 2-3 days before
- Do not use enemas or rectal suppositories
- Collect stool naturally; exclude urine and water contamination
- Use sterile container; collect from 3-5 different areas
- Deliver within 2-3 hours; store at +2 to +8°C up to 8-12 hours if needed
Medications: If taking antiparasitic drugs — inform physician; collect before treatment if possible
Note: PCR testing after treatment is usually done no earlier than 2-3 weeks after.

- nausea, reduced appetite;
- unstable stool;
- unexplained allergic reactions;
- elevated eosinophils;
- unexplained cough, bronchitis;
- weakness, fatigue;
- suspected parasitic infection;
- negative microscopy with symptoms.
Note: Test detects even small parasite DNA fragments with proper sample collection.
Negative — A. lumbricoides DNA not detected.
Positive — A. lumbricoides DNA detected; confirms parasite presence.
Physician consultation required at positive result.
Infectious disease parasitologist consultation recommended. Self-treatment not recommended.
