Growth hormone (GH, somatotropin) (Growth Hormone, GH, Serum)
The test determines the level of growth hormone (GH, somatotropin), produced by the anterior pituitary gland. GH regulates bone and tissue growth, protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism, and recovery and regeneration processes.
Used to diagnose growth hormone secretion disorders: gigantism and acromegaly in adults, growth retardation in children. Prescribed for suspected pituitary tumors, endocrine, and metabolic disorders.
What the test evaluates:
- Somatotropin concentration in blood serum
- Pituitary functional state
- Presence of hyper- or hyposecretion of growth hormone
Biomaterial: Venous blood (serum)
- Draw blood fasting
- Exclude intense physical activity and stress 24 hours before
- Avoid smoking and emotional tension before testing
Medications:
- Hormonal drugs, insulin, glucocorticoids, and other medications may affect GH level
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Suspected acromegaly, gigantism, growth hormone deficiency
- Growth retardation and physical development disorders in children
- Hypothalamic-pituitary area diseases
- Suspected pituitary adenomas
Elevated GH: may indicate acromegaly, gigantism, pituitary tumors
Reduced GH: possible growth hormone deficiency and pituitary function disorders
Note: Due to pulsatile GH secretion, functional tests (glucose tolerance test, stimulation tests) or IGF-1 determination are often required for accurate diagnosis.
