H. pylori 14C-Urea Breath Test (Rapid Diagnostics)
- The Helicobacter pylori breath test is a non-invasive rapid diagnostic method for H. pylori infection.
- The test helps detect Helicobacter pylori — a bacterium associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum, and elevated stomach cancer risk.
- Particularly recommended for abdominal pain, heartburn, frequent dyspeptic symptoms, and monitoring eradication therapy efficacy.
Method principle:
- The patient takes a urea solution labeled with the 14C isotope.
- If H. pylori bacteria are present in the stomach, its urease enzyme breaks down the urea, forming carbon dioxide.
- The 14C-labeled CO2 released during breathing is detected by the device, allowing infection detection.
Biomaterial: Exhaled air (breath test)
- Submit fasting.
- Do not smoke for 6-8 hours before the test.
- Avoid chewing gum, mint products, and sweet beverages before the test.
Medications: do not take antibiotics for 2 weeks before the test.
- Do not use proton pump inhibitors for 2 weeks.
- Do not use H2-blockers for 24-48 hours.
- Positive result: presence of H. pylori, requires further monitoring or treatment.
- Negative result: absence of H. pylori, infection not detected.
- Test errors: possible with antibiotic use, proton pump inhibitors, or H2-blockers before the test.
