Haptoglobin determination in blood (Haptoglobin, Serum)
Study of haptoglobin level — an acute phase inflammation protein binding free hemoglobin. Used for diagnosis and assessment of intravascular hemolysis severity. Applied for inflammatory processes, liver diseases, and anemias. Helps differentiate hemolytic anemia from other anemia types.
What the test evaluates:
- Haptoglobin concentration in blood serum
- Presence and degree of erythrocyte destruction
- Inflammatory process activity
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
- Exclude intense physical activity 24 hours before
Medications:
- Anti-inflammatory drugs, hormonal agents, and immunomodulators may affect haptoglobin level
- Inform physician of all medications taken
Recommended for:
- Suspected hemolytic anemias, autoimmune blood diseases
- Anemia of unclear origin, inflammation signs
- Systemic inflammatory and infectious processes
- Liver diseases, protein synthesis disorders
Results must be interpreted considering clinical picture, comorbidities, and drug therapy. Elevated haptoglobin may indicate acute inflammation or hepatic pathology; reduced — hemolytic anemia.
