Hepatitis B Surface Antigen, HBsAg (Serum)
The HBsAg test determines the presence of the hepatitis B virus surface antigen — the main marker of infection.
Allows detection of acute and chronic viral hepatitis B, including asymptomatic forms.
Used for screening during preventive examinations, pregnancy, before surgeries and hospitalization.
Recommended for contact with infected persons and when liver disease is suspected.
Important: the test is a screening test, and a positive result requires additional confirmatory testing.
What the test assesses:
- Presence of hepatitis B virus surface antigen in serum
- Fact of current hepatitis B virus infection
Biomaterial: Venous blood
• Submit fasting
• Avoid intense physical exertion for 24 hours
Medications:
• If possible, avoid antiviral and immunomodulatory medications for 24-48 hours
Recommended for testing:
• During preventive examination
• When viral hepatitis is suspected
• With liver diseases
• During pregnancy
Important: results are assessed in combination with clinical data and other hepatitis B markers.
Negative result
— surface antigen not detected
— no signs of current infection
Positive result
— presence of hepatitis B virus
— possible acute or chronic hepatitis B
Important: a positive result requires physician consultation and extended examination.
