Indirect (Unconjugated) Bilirubin
Indirect bilirubin is the 'unbound' bilirubin form not yet processed by the liver.
The test helps detect disorders of:
- liver bilirubin processing
- increased erythrocyte breakdown
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Fasting for 8-12 hours.
Medications: inform staff of medications taken.
Prescribed for:
- jaundice
- suspected hemolysis (erythrocyte breakdown)
- anemias
Gilbert's syndrome (hereditary bilirubin metabolism trait)
Elevated indirect bilirubin occurs with:
- hemolytic conditions
- Gilbert's syndrome
- certain liver diseases
For abnormalities, consultation with a general practitioner/gastroenterologist, sometimes a hematologist, is recommended.
Self-treatment is contraindicated.
