Insulin blood test
The test determines the level of insulin — the pancreatic hormone responsible for carbohydrate metabolism regulation. Insulin ensures glucose delivery to cells and maintains normal blood sugar levels. Used to assess pancreatic beta-cell function. Applied in insulin resistance, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome diagnosis.
What the test evaluates:
- Insulin concentration in blood serum
- Carbohydrate metabolism state
- Indirectly — tissue insulin sensitivity (combined with glucose, HOMA-IR index)
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood strictly fasting
- Still water is permitted
- Exclude physical activity, alcohol, and stress 24 hours before
Medications:
- Insulin, hypoglycemic drugs, glucocorticoids may affect results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Suspected diabetes and insulin resistance
- Metabolic disorders and obesity
- PCOS and ovulation disorders
- Metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risks
Elevated level: possible with insulin resistance, obesity, PCOS, prediabetes, insulinoma
Reduced level: may indicate type 1 diabetes, pronounced beta-cell insufficiency, hypopituitarism
Note: Simultaneous blood glucose determination is recommended for correct assessment.
