Ionized Calcium, Serum
The test determines the ionized calcium concentration — the active form of calcium in blood involved in blood clotting, muscle function, and the nervous system. Used for assessing mineral metabolism, parathyroid gland function, and monitoring calcium metabolism disorder therapy.
Mechanism of abnormalities: elevation or decrease in ionized calcium concentration may indicate endocrine disorders, kidney, bone diseases, or calcium metabolism disorders.
Recommended for:
- people with chronic kidney or bone diseases
- with heart or muscle function disorders
- for monitoring bone and endocrine system disease treatment
- with suspected calcium imbalance
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Submit fasting (8-12 hours without food)
- Do not drink water
- Avoid calcium-containing supplements and vitamin D for 24 hours (with doctor's approval)
- Avoid intense physical exertion and stress
Medications: if taking calcium supplements or vitamin D — inform the doctor
- Suspected hypo- or hypercalcemia
- Heart, muscle, or nervous system function disorders
- Bone and joint diseases
- Monitoring therapy in mineral metabolism disorders
- Chronic kidney diseases
Normal — ionized calcium level within reference values
Abnormality — requires physician assessment to determine the cause of imbalance and prescribe treatment
Which doctor to consult:
For test abnormalities, consultation with an endocrinologist, general practitioner, or nephrologist is recommended. The doctor evaluates laboratory results, clarifies clinical symptoms, and if needed prescribes treatment.
Self-treatment is not recommended!
