Ketone Bodies (Acetone) Determination
- The ketone bodies (acetone) test assesses ketone body concentration in blood or urine.
- The test helps detect energy metabolism disorders characteristic of diabetes, fasting, intense physical exertion, and metabolic disorders.
- Particularly recommended when ketoacidosis and persistent intoxication symptoms are suspected.
What the test assesses:
- Ketone body level — sign of metabolic disorder.
- Degree of ketone elevation — possibility of ketoacidosis.
Biomaterial: Urine
- Submit fasting.
- Avoid intense physical exertion for 24 hours before the test.
Medications: if possible, avoid taking drugs affecting metabolism 24-48 hours before the test.
- Normal: ketone bodies absent or present in minimal amounts.
- Elevation: may indicate decompensated diabetes, fasting, intense physical exertion, metabolic disorders.
- Significantly elevated values: require urgent endocrinologist consultation — possible ketoacidosis.
