Macroprolactin (Macroprolactin, Serum)
The test differentiates true hyperprolactinemia from elevated macroprolactin — a biologically inactive prolactin form. Prescribed when elevated total prolactin is detected. Allows determination of whether prolactin elevation requires treatment. Helps avoid unwarranted hormonal therapy and additional examinations.
What the test evaluates:
- Presence and proportion of macroprolactin in blood serum
- Biological activity of prolactin
- True hormonally active prolactin (monomeric)
Biomaterial: Venous blood (serum)
- Draw blood fasting
- Same conditions as for prolactin test:
- Exclude physical activity, stress, and sexual contacts 24 hours before
- Morning blood draw recommended (8:00-11:00)
Medications:
- Prolactin-affecting drugs (hormones, antipsychotics, antidepressants) may affect results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Elevated prolactin level
- Menstrual cycle disorders, infertility, galactorrhea
- Reduced libido and fertility in men
- ART program pre-examination
Macroprolactin detected:
- prolactin elevation related to biologically inactive form;
- treatment generally not required
Macroprolactin absent:
- confirms true hyperprolactinemia;
- further examination and treatment required
Note: Results interpreted only together with total prolactin level and clinical data.
