What the test evaluates:
- Complex of prostate-specific antigen indicators (total PSA and its fractions)
- Probability of benign and malignant prostate gland diseases
Biomaterial: Venous blood
Abstain from ejaculation at least 48 hours before
Exclude prostate massage, transrectal ultrasound, cystoscopy 7 days before
Draw blood before or no earlier than 2 weeks after prostate biopsy
Medications:
PSA-affecting drugs (5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, etc.) may distort results
Inform physician of all medications taken
Recommended for:
Men over 40 years as part of preventive examination
With elevated PSA values or suspected prostate cancer
Results evaluated only by physician considering patient age, ultrasound data, digital rectal examination, and clinical picture.
Normal: PSA indicators within age reference values; low probability of malignant process
Deviations: elevated PSA may occur in prostate cancer; possible in benign prostate hyperplasia, prostatitis, after instrumental procedures
Elevated PSA is not a diagnosis and requires further examination.
