Natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP)
The test determines the level of N-terminal fragment of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) — a biomarker released by cardiomyocytes during myocardial overload and stretching. Used for diagnosis and severity assessment of heart failure. Helps differentiate cardiac and non-cardiac causes of dyspnea. Applied to monitor chronic heart failure treatment efficacy.
What the test evaluates:
- NT-proBNP concentration in blood serum
- Degree of cardiac load and myocardial functional state
- Heart failure risk and severity
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- No special preparation required
- Fasting recommended
- Limit intense physical activity and alcohol 24 hours before
Medications:
- Diuretics, cardiac glycosides, heart failure drugs may affect indicator level
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Suspected heart failure
- Dyspnea, edema, chronic fatigue
- Acute cardiovascular pathology
- Edema syndrome differential diagnosis
Elevated NT-proBNP: heart failure (acute or chronic); cardiac volume or pressure overload; myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathies
Normal level: makes heart failure diagnosis unlikely
Results interpreted considering age, kidney function, and clinical picture.
