NSE (Neuron-Specific Enolase, Serum)
The test is aimed at determination of neuron-specific enolase level — a protein produced by neuroendocrine system cells. Used as an oncomarker of neuroendocrine tumors. Most informative in small cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, and CNS tumors. Applied for treatment efficacy assessment and early recurrence detection.
What the test evaluates:
- NSE concentration in blood serum
- Activity and dynamics of tumor process
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
Medications:
- Medications may affect results
- Inform physician of hormonal, antitumor, and immunomodulating agents
- Medication discontinuation only by physician prescription
Recommended for:
- Suspected neuroendocrine tumors
- Suspected small cell lung cancer
- Nervous system tumors
Results evaluated only together with clinical data, instrumental methods, and other oncomarkers.
Normal: NSE within reference values; no signs of active neuroendocrine tumor process
Elevated NSE: possible in neuroendocrine tumors; may occur with nerve tissue damage, hemolysis, severe neurological conditions
Minor elevation is not an independent diagnosis.
