Osteocalcin
The test determines the level of osteocalcin — the protein synthesized by osteoblasts and participating in bone tissue formation. Osteocalcin is a bone formation marker and reflects bone tissue renewal rate. Used to assess bone tissue metabolism and osteoporosis risk. Applied to monitor osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disease treatment.
What the test evaluates:
- Osteocalcin concentration in blood serum
- Bone formation process activity
- Balance between bone tissue resorption and formation
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
- Morning blood draw recommended (8:00-10:00)
- Exclude intense physical activity 24 hours before
Medications:
- Calcium, vitamin D, bisphosphonates, hormonal agents may affect results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement

Elevated osteocalcin: enhanced bone formation; osteoporosis with high remodeling rate; hyperparathyroidism, thyrotoxicosis
Reduced level: slowed bone formation; vitamin D deficiency; glucocorticoid intake
