Parathyroid hormone (PTH, Intact) (Parathyroid Hormone, PTH, Intact)
The test determines the level of parathyroid hormone (PTH), produced by the parathyroid glands. PTH is the key regulator of calcium-phosphorus metabolism. The hormone affects intestinal calcium absorption, its renal excretion, and calcium mobilization from bone tissue. Used to diagnose primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism, and hypoparathyroidism. Applied to assess hypercalcemia or hypocalcemia causes.
What the test evaluates:
- Parathyroid hormone concentration in blood serum
- Calcium-phosphorus metabolism regulation state
- Parathyroid gland functional activity
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
- Exclude physical activity and intense training 24 hours before
- Avoid smoking before blood draw
Medications:
- Calcium and vitamin D preparations may affect results
- Diuretics and hormonal drugs can also change PTH level
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorders
- Chronic kidney diseases and secondary hyperparathyroidism
- Osteoporosis, pathological fractures, reduced bone density
- Calcium and phosphorus level deviations in biochemical blood test
Elevated PTH: may indicate hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, or chronic renal failure
Reduced values: characteristic of hypoparathyroidism, post-operative states, excess calcium intake
Results evaluated together with calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels.
