Progesterone (ovulation and reproductive function assessment)
The test determines the level of progesterone — one of the key steroid hormones of the reproductive system. Progesterone is synthesized by the ovarian corpus luteum after ovulation, and during pregnancy — by the placenta; produced in small amounts by the adrenal glands. The hormone prepares the endometrium for embryo implantation and supports early pregnancy. Used to confirm ovulation fact and assess luteal phase adequacy. Prescribed for infertility diagnosis, recurrent pregnancy loss, anovulatory cycles.
What the test evaluates:
- Progesterone concentration in blood serum
- Corpus luteum functional activity
- Body hormonal readiness for pregnancy onset and maintenance
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
- Test performed on specific cycle day:
- With 28-day cycle — usually day 21-23
- With irregular cycle — by physician prescription
- Exclude physical activity, stress, alcohol 24 hours before
Medications:
- Progestins, combined oral contraceptives, other hormonal drugs may distort results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Menstrual irregularities, infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss
- ART program preparation (IVF, ICSI)
- Comprehensive hormonal background assessment
- Early pregnancy monitoring
Elevated level: physiologically — during pregnancy; pathologically — with corpus luteum cyst, ovarian or adrenal tumors
Reduced level: absent or insufficient ovulation; luteal phase insufficiency; risk of early pregnancy loss.
