Prolactin (Prolactin, Serum)
The test determines the concentration of prolactin — the pituitary hormone regulating reproductive function and lactation. Prolactin affects menstrual cycle and ovulation in women, and spermatogenesis and testosterone levels in men.
Used to diagnose causes of infertility, menstrual irregularities, and galactorrhea.
Recommended for breast discharge outside lactation, amenorrhea, reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, headaches, vision disorders.
What the test evaluates:
- Prolactin level in blood serum
- Pituitary hormonal activity and prolactin effect on the reproductive system
Biomaterial: Venous blood (serum)
- Draw blood fasting
- Exclude physical activity, stress, and sexual contacts 24 hours before
- Morning blood draw recommended (8:00-11:00)
Medications:
- Hormonal drugs, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antiemetics may affect results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
Recommended for:
- Menstrual cycle disorders and infertility
- Suspected hyperprolactinemia or pituitary adenoma
- Reduced reproductive function and libido in men
- ART program preparation
Elevated prolactin: may indicate hyperprolactinemia, pituitary adenoma, hypothyroidism, PCOS, or certain drug intake
Reduced level: rare, may be related to pituitary function disorder
Note: Prolactin level is sensitive to stress, physical activity, and blood draw time; proper preparation is important.
