Rehberg Test (Creatinine Clearance)

The test assesses kidney function through determining creatinine clearance — the kidneys' ability to filter blood and excrete metabolic products. Used for diagnosing chronic kidney disease and monitoring its course.

Mechanism of abnormalities: decreased creatinine clearance indicates worsening kidney filtration function. Elevated values are rare and require physician assessment.

Recommended for:

  • people with chronic kidney diseases
  • with swelling or elevated blood pressure
  • for monitoring kidney disease treatment
  • with suspected decreased kidney function

Biomaterial: Venous blood, 24-hour urine

  • Submit fasting (8-12 hours without food)
  • Do not drink water
  • Collect urine over 24 hours according to laboratory instructions
  • Avoid alcohol and excessive physical exertion for 24 hours
  • Avoid stress

Medications: if taking diuretics, heart, or kidney medications — inform the doctor

  • Suspected renal failure
  • Chronic kidney diseases
  • Swelling, elevated blood pressure
  • Decreased urine volume
  • Monitoring therapy efficacy in kidney diseases

Normal — creatinine clearance within reference values considering age and sex

Decreased clearance — signals decreased kidney function

Which doctor to consult:

If kidney function disorder is suspected or test abnormalities are detected, consultation with a nephrologist is recommended. The doctor evaluates laboratory results, clarifies clinical symptoms, and if needed prescribes treatment or additional tests.

Self-treatment is not recommended!
