S100 (Protein S100, Serum)
Determination of S100 protein level — a highly sensitive melanoma marker. Used to assess tumor process extent. Applied for treatment efficacy monitoring and recurrence detection. Can be used as a nerve tissue damage marker.
What the test evaluates:
- S100 protein level in blood
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood fasting
Medications:
- Drug therapy may affect indicators
- Inform physician of all medications taken
- Medication discontinuation only by physician prescription
Recommended for:
- Melanoma
- Malignant skin neoplasms
- Central nervous system lesions
Results interpreted only together with clinical data and instrumental studies.
Normal: S100 protein within reference values; no laboratory signs of active tumor process
Elevated S100: possible in melanoma (correlates with stage and metastasis); may occur with trauma, stroke, inflammatory and degenerative CNS lesions
Elevated indicator is not an independent diagnosis.
