Semen Analysis (Spermogram)
Purpose of the test:
- Spermogram is a laboratory semen test assessing male fertility and the functional status of the male reproductive system.
- The test detects abnormalities in sperm count, motility, morphology, and viability.
- Particularly recommended when planning pregnancy, with infertility, or suspected inflammatory or hormonal disorders.
Biomaterial: Semen collected by masturbation into a sterile container
- Sexual abstinence for 2-7 days.
- Avoid alcohol, fatty food, and excessive physical exertion for 2-3 days.
- Collect material immediately before submission.
Medications: if possible, avoid antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs 3-5 days before the test.
What the test assesses:
- Ejaculate volume — seminal vesicle functional activity.
- Sperm concentration — count of motile and immotile cells.
- Sperm motility — activity and fertilization capacity.
- Morphology — sperm structure and shape.
- Presence of leukocytes and other cells — inflammatory processes.
- Normal: sperm count, motility, and morphology meet WHO standards.
- Abnormalities: decreased concentration, motility, or pathological morphology may indicate male infertility factors, inflammatory processes, hormonal disorders, or external factor influence (stress, infections, lifestyle).
- Recommendations: if abnormalities are detected, an andrologist may prescribe additional tests, treatment, or lifestyle correction.
