Serum Iron
Serum iron shows the concentration of iron circulating in blood, bound to the transferrin protein. The test helps assess iron metabolism, detect deficiency or excess, and monitor anemia treatment efficacy.
The test helps:
- Detect iron deficiency
- Diagnose iron-deficiency anemia
- Assess efficacy of iron supplement treatment
- Detect iron overload (in hemochromatosis)
- Clarify causes of anemia
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Submit fasting (8-12 hours without food)
- Avoid alcohol and intense physical exertion for 24 hours
- Avoid iron supplements for 3-5 days (with doctor's approval)
- Decreased hemoglobin
- Anemia symptoms (weakness, fatigue, skin pallor, dizziness)
- Suspected iron metabolism disorders
- Chronic inflammatory diseases and liver diseases
- Planned monitoring of iron supplement therapy
Elevation — iron overload, hemochromatosis, acute hemolytic process
Decrease — iron deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia, chronic inflammatory processes
