Stool culture on pathogenic intestinal infections (Salmonella, Shigella)
Detects pathogenic intestinal bacteria — Salmonella and Shigella. Confirms bacterial intestinal infection diagnosis.
Deviation mechanism: Pathogenic bacteria enter body through contaminated food/water or contact → proliferate in intestine → cultured on nutrient media → species identified.
Recommended for: intestinal infection symptom patients; suspected food poisoning or bacterial diarrhea; antibiotic treatment monitoring.
Fresh stool in sterile container
Avoid antibiotics 48-72 hours before (by physician agreement)
Do not use laxatives or enemas 24 hours before
Collect fresh stool (not older than 2-3 hours)
Deliver to laboratory as quickly as possible
Diarrhea or stool changes; abdominal pain and cramps; elevated temperature; nausea, vomiting; suspected food infection; prolonged or recurrent intestinal diseases.
Salmonella or Shigella detected — confirms infection.
Not detected — pathogenic intestinal bacteria not found.
Physician makes final assessment.
Note: Sensitivity testing only when clinically significant organism detected.
