Stool pancreatic elastase test
The test determines the level of pancreatic elastase-1 — the enzyme produced by the pancreas and excreted in stool. A non-invasive and highly informative method for assessing pancreatic exocrine function. Used to diagnose pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. Applied in chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, intestinal diseases, and after GI surgeries.
What the test evaluates:
- Pancreatic elastase-1 concentration in stool
- Degree of preserved pancreatic enzymatic function
- Exocrine insufficiency severity (mild, moderate, severe)
Biomaterial: Stool
- No special diet required
- Collect stool in sterile container
- Enzyme preparations (pancreatin and analogs) are allowed
- Not recommended during watery diarrhea
Medications:
- Enzyme preparations do not affect results
- Laxatives, enemas, rectal suppositories may distort results
- Medication intake should be coordinated with physician
Recommended for:
- Suspected chronic pancreatitis and malabsorption syndrome
- Prolonged digestive disorders
- Patients with diabetes
- Weight gain delay, chronic diarrhea in children
- After pancreatic and GI surgery
Normal: preserved pancreatic exocrine function
Moderately reduced: mild or moderate exocrine insufficiency
Sharply reduced: pronounced exocrine insufficiency (often in chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis)
Note: Enzyme replacement therapy does not distort test results.
