Thyroglobulin (TG) (Thyroglobulin, TG, Serum)
The test determines the concentration of thyroglobulin — the protein synthesized by thyroid cells and participating in T3 and T4 hormone formation.
Used as an oncomarker for monitoring patients after differentiated thyroid cancer treatment (papillary and follicular). Applied to assess residual or recurrent thyroid tissue after thyroidectomy and/or radioiodine therapy. Prescribed for dynamic monitoring and early disease recurrence detection.
What the test evaluates:
- Thyroglobulin level in blood serum
- Presence of functional thyroid tissue
- Possible recurrence or tumor metastasis signs (after complete gland removal)
Biomaterial: Venous blood (serum)
- Draw blood fasting
- Exclude physical activity and stress 24 hours before
Medications:
- Thyroid hormones and iodine preparations may affect results
- Medication discontinuation only by physician agreement
- Inform physician of all medications taken
Recommended for:
- Thyroid diseases and after its removal
- Dynamic monitoring after thyroid cancer treatment
- Hormonal and oncological status monitoring
Low or undetectable level: characteristic after complete thyroidectomy; indicates absence of active tissue
Elevated level: may indicate residual thyroid tissue or disease recurrence
Note: Simultaneous anti-thyroglobulin antibody (Anti-Tg) determination is recommended as they may distort results.
