Total Bilirubin
Purpose of the test:
Total bilirubin is the combined indicator of all bilirubin forms in blood.
Bilirubin forms during erythrocyte breakdown and is processed by the liver.
The test is used for assessing:
- liver function
- bile metabolism
- causes of jaundice
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Fasting for 8-12 hours, water allowed;
- avoid fatty food/alcohol for 24 hours.
Medications: inform staff of medications taken.
Prescribed for:
- yellowing of skin/sclera
- dark urine, light-colored stool
- skin itching
- pain in the right upper quadrant
- suspected hepatitis
- monitoring liver and gallbladder diseases
Elevation may be related to:
- hepatitis
- bile outflow disorder
- hemolysis (increased erythrocyte breakdown)
For abnormalities, consultation with a general practitioner/gastroenterologist is recommended. Self-treatment is contraindicated.
