Detects Toxocara canis DNA — roundworm causing toxocariasis in humans. PCR detects genetic material even when eggs/larvae destroyed.
Infection routes:
- dirty hands;
- soil or sand contact (playgrounds);
- contact with dogs;
- unwashed vegetables, berries, greens.
Recommended for:
- children (especially playing in sand);
- dog owners;
- elevated eosinophils;
- frequent unexplained allergies;
- prolonged cough or 'bronchitis';
- negative microscopy results.
Biomaterial: Stool
- Do not take laxatives 2-3 days before
- Do not use enemas or rectal suppositories
- Collect stool naturally; exclude urine and water contamination
- Use sterile container; collect from 3-5 different areas
- Deliver within 2-3 hours; store at +2 to +8°C up to 8-12 hours if needed
Medications: If taking antiparasitic drugs — inform physician; collect before treatment if possible
Note: PCR testing after treatment is usually done no earlier than 2-3 weeks after.
- Prolonged cough or bronchitis without obvious cause;
- frequent allergic rashes, itching, urticaria;
- elevated eosinophils;
- prolonged temperature, weakness;
- enlarged liver or lymph nodes;
- abdominal pain, nausea;
- suspected eye involvement;
- contact with dogs;
- negative microscopy with symptoms.
Note: Test detects even small parasite DNA fragments.
Negative — T. canis DNA not detected.
Positive — T. canis DNA detected; confirms parasite presence.
Physician consultation required at positive result.
Infectious disease parasitologist consultation recommended. Self-treatment not recommended.
