Urine Bile Pigments
Purpose of the test:
- Urine bile pigment testing helps detect liver and biliary tract diseases.
- Particularly recommended for jaundice, dark urine, pain in the right upper quadrant, and liver function disorders.
What the test assesses:
- Presence of bilirubin and other bile pigments — indirect signs of liver and bile duct diseases.
Biomaterial: Single morning urine sample
- Collect morning urine in a clean container.
- Avoid alcohol and fatty food for 24 hours before the test.
Medications: if possible, avoid taking drugs affecting the liver and biliary tract 24-48 hours before the test.
- Normal: bilirubin absent in urine.
- Positive result: presence of bilirubin may indicate liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis), bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis.
- Important: a positive result requires hepatologist or general practitioner consultation to clarify the cause and further examination.
