Urine Urea, 24-Hour
The test allows determining the urea level in urine — the final product of protein metabolism excreted by the kidneys. Used for assessing kidney function, monitoring protein metabolism, and detecting excretory system disorders.
Mechanism of abnormalities: elevated urinary urea may indicate high protein load, accelerated protein breakdown, or decreased renal reabsorption. Decrease — kidney filtration capacity disorder or insufficient protein intake.
Recommended for:
- people with chronic kidney diseases
- with diuresis disorders and swelling
- for monitoring protein metabolism
- with suspected metabolic disorders
Biomaterial: 24-hour urine
- Collect urine over 24 hours in a clean container
- Exclude high-protein foods for 2-3 days
- Avoid intense physical exertion and stress
Medications: if taking medications affecting kidney function or protein metabolism — inform the doctor
- Suspected kidney diseases (glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis)
- Protein metabolism disorders
- Monitoring therapy in chronic kidney diseases
- Swelling, diuresis changes, and elevated blood pressure
Normal — 24-hour urine urea level within reference values
Abnormality — requires physician assessment to determine the cause and choose further tactics
Which doctor to consult:
For test abnormalities, consultation with a general practitioner or nephrologist is recommended. The doctor evaluates laboratory results, correlates them with the clinical picture, and if needed prescribes treatment or additional examinations.
Self-treatment is not recommended!
