Valproic acid (Valproic Acid, VPA)
The test is intended for monitoring anticonvulsant drug concentration in blood.
Prevention of toxic effects and adverse reactions. Assessment of therapy efficacy in epilepsy, seizure disorders, and neuropsychiatric diseases. Individualization of dosage for optimal therapeutic effect.
What the test evaluates:
- Concentration of the anticonvulsant drug in blood serum
- Compliance of drug level with the therapeutic window for effective seizure control
- Possibility of dose adjustment considering patient pharmacokinetic features, age, body weight, and concomitant medications
Biomaterial: Venous blood
- Draw blood before next drug dose (trough concentration)
- Strictly follow drug intake schedule
- Exclude intense physical activity and stress 24 hours before
Medications:
- Test performed during current drug intake
- Exact dose and intake schedule must be indicated
- Concomitant drugs may affect anticonvulsant metabolism
Recommended for:
- Epilepsy and seizure syndromes
- Prescription of anticonvulsants for mental state stabilization
- Patients on long-term anticonvulsant therapy for dosage monitoring and adjustment

Normal: drug concentration corresponds to therapeutic range; seizure control effective, no toxic effects
Deviations:
- concentration below therapeutic range — risk of ineffective seizure control;
- concentration above therapeutic range — risk of side effects and intoxication;
- requires dose adjustment under attending physician supervision.
