Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin)

The test determines the blood vitamin B12 level — an important water-soluble vitamin necessary for hematopoiesis, nervous system function, and DNA synthesis. Vitamin B12 participates in erythrocyte formation, maintaining brain and peripheral nerve function, and amino acid and fatty acid metabolism.

Decreased vitamin B12 is possible with: insufficient dietary intake, absorption disorder in the stomach and intestines, autoimmune diseases (pernicious anemia), liver diseases, prolonged use of certain medications.

Elevation is possible with: liver diseases, oncological diseases, excessive B12 supplement intake.
