Gallbladder Function Tests
Gallbladder function tests are additional examinations that assess the function of the gallbladder and bile ducts, including the organ's ability to empty following stimulation.
These tests are often performed together with gallbladder ultrasound and help the physician understand:
- how effectively the gallbladder contracts and releases bile
- whether bile stasis is present
- whether there are signs of dyskinesia or functional disorders
The procedure is painless, safe, and takes 15–20 minutes.

Preparation
- do not eat 6–8 hours before the examination (fasting),
- 1–2 days before the test, limit gas-producing foods (legumes, cabbage, carbonated beverages, fresh baked goods),
- arrive in a calm state, as the test involves mild stimulation of gallbladder contraction (usually with a small meal or a choleretic medication as prescribed by the doctor).
Function tests are recommended for:
- periodic pain in the right upper abdomen, especially after eating
- abdominal heaviness, bloating, or nausea
- suspected gallbladder dyskinesia
- monitoring the effectiveness of choleretic therapy
