Therapeutic Enema
A therapeutic enema is a procedure involving the introduction of medications, oils, or therapeutic solutions into the rectum for therapeutic purposes. Unlike a cleansing enema, a therapeutic enema is aimed not at mechanical cleansing but at local or systemic action of the medication on the intestinal mucosa.
Used for inflammatory conditions of the large intestine (colitis, proctitis), rectal ulcer disease, and in cases where oral medication intake is impossible or undesirable. Prescribed by a gastroenterologist or proctologist and performed in a course according to an individual scheme.

Preparation:
- The procedure is performed only by the attending physician's prescription and scheme
- A cleansing enema is usually performed immediately before the therapeutic enema — confirm with the physician
- Inform personnel about allergy to medications in the solution
- Limit food intake 1–2 hours before the procedure
- After solution administration, retain it in the intestine for the time specified by the physician (usually 20–40 minutes) — lie on the left side
