Endoscopic Forceps Biopsy

Endoscopic forceps biopsy is a safe procedure performed during Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, EGD). Using special biopsy forceps passed through the endoscope, the physician collects a small tissue sample from the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum for histopathological examination.

What does an endoscopic biopsy show?

An endoscopic biopsy can help:

Detect inflammation, erosions, and ulcers
Identify polyps, dysplasia (precancerous changes), and other abnormalities
Diagnose infections, including Helicobacter pylori
Confirm or rule out benign and malignant tumors

Histopathological examination provides an accurate diagnosis, helps guide the most appropriate treatment, and allows physicians to monitor the effectiveness of therapy for gastrointestinal diseases.

The same preparation as for Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD) is required:

Do not eat for 6–8 hours before the procedure.
Do not smoke for at least 2 hours before the examination.
Inform your physician about all medications you are taking, particularly blood thinners (anticoagulants), proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and any other medications that may affect the procedure.
If appropriate, you may discuss the option of light sedation with your physician to improve comfort during the examination.
