Peritonsillar Abscess Incision
Peritonsillar abscess incision is a surgical ENT procedure aimed at removing purulent contents from the area around the palatine tonsil. A peritonsillar abscess is a complication of inflammatory throat conditions, most commonly acute or chronic tonsillitis, and requires timely treatment. The procedure is performed by an otorhinolaryngologist in a medical office under local anesthesia.
How the procedure is performed:
• The physician examines the patient and identifies the location of the abscess.
• Local anesthesia is administered.
• A small incision is made in the area where the pus has accumulated.
• The purulent contents are removed.
• The cavity is treated with an antiseptic solution.
• A drain is placed if necessary.
The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes.
After the procedure:
The physician may prescribe medication and schedule a follow-up examination to assess the healing process. Treatment may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, and gargling with antiseptic solutions.
