Abdominal ultrasound for children is a safe and informative examination that evaluates the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.
The method is widely used in children of all ages, including newborns, and helps detect conditions at an early stage.
What the examination shows
During the examination, the physician assesses:
- organ size and shape
- tissue structure
- presence of inflammatory changes
- congenital developmental features
- signs of bile stasis, cysts, or other abnormalities
The examination helps diagnose digestive organ conditions and monitor treatment effectiveness.
How the procedure is performed
The examination is performed through the anterior abdominal wall using an ultrasound probe. The procedure is painless, safe, and takes 10–15 minutes. It is well tolerated by children and can be performed even while the child is asleep.

Preparation depends on the child's age:
- Newborns and infants under 1 year: no feeding 2–3 hours before the examination
- Children aged 1–3 years: no feeding 3–4 hours
- Children over 3 years: no eating 5–6 hours
1–2 days before the examination (if the child eats regular food): it is advisable to limit gas-producing foods: legumes, carbonated drinks, cabbage, sweets.
