Ultrasound monitoring of an intrauterine device (IUD)
IUD ultrasound monitoring is a safe ultrasound examination that allows verification of the correct position of an intrauterine device (IUD) after insertion.
During the examination, the doctor evaluates:
- the position of the IUD within the uterine cavity,
- possible displacement or partial misalignment,
- the condition of the endometrium and uterus,
- the presence of complications (such as inflammation or mucosal injury).
The examination helps to detect incorrect IUD positioning in a timely manner and prevent possible complications such as pain, bleeding, or reduced contraceptive effectiveness.
The procedure is performed transvaginally and is painless, safe, and takes 5–10 minutes.

Preparation
- The bladder should be empty.
- It is preferable to have the examination on days 5–10 of the menstrual cycle, unless the doctor has specified a different time.
- If available, bring information about the type and date of IUD insertion.
The procedure allows the doctor to quickly and safely confirm the correct position of the device and rule out any complications.
A follow-up ultrasound is recommended:
- 1–3 months after IUD insertion,
- if IUD displacement is suspected,
- in cases of pain, unusual discharge, or changes in the menstrual cycle,
- before planning a pregnancy after IUD removal.
