Doppler Ultrasound of Arteries of Both Upper Limbs

Doppler ultrasound of the arteries of both upper limbs is a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the arterial circulation in both arms, from the subclavian arteries to the arteries of the hands and fingers. The examination evaluates arterial patency, blood flow velocity and pattern, the condition of the arterial walls, and the presence of atherosclerotic plaques, arterial stenosis (narrowing), or blood clots (thrombi).

The examination is recommended for patients with numbness, pale or bluish discoloration of the fingers (Raynaud's phenomenon), cold hands, unequal blood pressure readings between the arms, pain in the arms during physical activity, or suspected atherosclerosis, arterial embolism, or vasculitis.

Assessing both upper limbs during the same examination allows physicians to compare blood flow between the arms, which is particularly important for detecting asymmetrical vascular disease and determining the most appropriate treatment strategy.

The procedure is safe, painless, requires no special preparation, and typically takes 30–40 minutes.

Preparation:

Avoid intense physical activity, including arm exercises, 2 hours before the examination
Do not smoke 2 hours before the procedure — nicotine causes peripheral vascular spasm and distorts results
Do not take vasoconstrictive medications on the day of examination without physician approval
Wear loose clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled above the elbow or removed
Remove jewelry from wrists and forearms before the examination
No special diet or fasting required
