Doppler Ultrasound of Veins of Both Upper Limbs
Doppler ultrasound of the veins of both upper limbs is a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the venous system in both arms. It evaluates the superficial veins (including the cephalic and basilic veins) as well as the deep veins, including the subclavian, axillary, brachial, and forearm veins. The examination assesses venous patency, venous valve function, and helps detect blood clots (thrombi), venous thrombosis, and signs of venous inflammation (thrombophlebitis).
The examination is recommended for patients with arm swelling, pain, tenderness or a hardened vein, redness, or warmth of the skin overlying a vein, which may indicate acute thrombophlebitis or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
It is also commonly performed in patients with central venous catheters, cardiac pacemakers, following chemotherapy, or in individuals with cancer, who may be at an increased risk of venous thrombosis.
The procedure is safe, painless, requires no special preparation, and typically takes 30–40 minutes.
