Doppler Ultrasound of Veins of One Upper Limb
Doppler ultrasound of the veins of one upper limb is a targeted ultrasound examination of the venous system in a single arm. It evaluates venous patency, blood flow, and helps detect blood clots (thrombi), venous thrombosis, and signs of thrombophlebitis.
The examination is recommended for patients with unilateral symptoms, such as swelling, pain, redness, or a hardened vein affecting one arm, which may indicate acute venous thrombosis or thrombophlebitis requiring prompt diagnosis.
It is also commonly performed in patients following peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter placement, intravenous infusions or medication administration, or after intravenous injections when local complications are suspected. The examination allows physicians to confirm or rule out venous thrombosis, determine its extent, identify the presence of a free-floating thrombus, and guide the most appropriate treatment strategy.
The procedure is safe, painless, requires no special preparation, and typically takes 20–25 minutes.
