Pleural Cavity Puncture
Pleural cavity puncture (thoracentesis) is a diagnostic-therapeutic procedure in which a special needle is used to pierce the chest wall and collect pleural cavity contents (fluid or air). The collected material is sent for laboratory analysis to determine the cause of accumulation.
Indicated for exudative pleurisy, hydrothorax, pneumothorax, hemothorax, and pleural empyema. Besides diagnostic purposes, the puncture serves a therapeutic function: removal of excess fluid or air from the pleural cavity relieves lung compression and significantly improves breathing. The procedure is performed by a surgeon under local anesthesia.
Location: Almaty, Aksai-5 district, 12A
Preparation:
- the procedure is performed by physician referral — chest X-ray or ultrasound results required
- complete blood count and coagulation test
- inform about anticoagulants and blood-thinning medications
- no eating 2–3 hours before the puncture on the procedure day
- remain under observation for at least 1–2 hours after
- bring a companion — driving independently after puncture is not recommended
