Zimnitsky Urine Test
Purpose of the test:
- The Zimnitsky urine test assesses kidney concentrating ability and detects water-salt metabolism disorders.
- Determines specific gravity fluctuations of urine throughout the day, detects polyuria or oliguria, and hidden kidney function disorders at early stages.
- Applied for chronic kidney disease, swelling, hypertension, thirst, and diuresis changes.
- Recommended for monitoring treatment efficacy in kidney and endocrine diseases.
What the test assesses:
- Urine specific gravity fluctuations over 24 hours.
- Hourly diuresis.
- Kidney ability to concentrate or dilute urine.
Biomaterial: Urine collected hourly over 24 hours
- Collect urine in clean containers by hour (usually every 3 hours).
- Store collected urine in the refrigerator.
- Follow hygiene rules during collection.
Medications: if possible, avoid taking drugs affecting urine (diuretics, lithium salts, etc.) 24-48 hours before the test.
Recommended for testing:
- patients with suspected kidney disease
- with unexplained swelling
- with urination volume changes (frequent or rare urination)
- when kidney concentrating function disorder is suspected
- with chronic kidney disease
- with elevated blood pressure
- for pregnant women with suspected kidney function disorders
- Normal: stable urine specific gravity fluctuation throughout the day (within 1.015-1.025 g/mL), daily diuresis 1200-1500 mL.
- Elevated specific gravity: possible dehydration, increased urine concentration.
- Decreased specific gravity: decreased kidney concentrating ability, possible chronic pyelonephritis, renal failure.
- Diuresis changes: polyuria (more than 2 L/day) — possible diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus; oliguria (less than 800 mL/day) — kidney function disorder or dehydration.
